Garten is an expert at making elegance appear effortless, and that ease is conveyed in the book. Even novice cooks will have no trouble following the recipes which utilize fresh, seasonal ingredients. Recipes include Warm Duck Salad, Lamb Kebabs with Couscous, Mustard-Roasted Potatoes and Chocolate Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Icing.
PROS:
- Plenty of full-page color photographs of the completed dishes and Garten's home. Most recipes are simple and utilize ten ingredients or less.
- Introduces novice cooks to ingredients like capons, polenta and fennel, and techniques like making your own stock and whipped cream.
- Even advanced cooks will find this cookbook useful as a starting point for their own additions to Garten's recipes.
CONS:
- The main index could be more comprehensive. Cornmeal-Fried Onion Rings, for example, is not included in the section about vegetables nor indexed with them, but can be found in the entree section.
- The book tries to include a little bit of everything, including recipes for a yeasted bread and homemade ice cream, leaving one feeling as though they learned a little bit about everything but a lot about nothing.
